Edit: Now That I've Beaten It Faster Than Expected Edition Disclaimer - Get this when it's on a good sale.==========VALA is a slick dual-stick shooter that comes as advertised, and the goofy we're-idiot-college-roommates humor works fine on the side considering all your gametime is almost solely invested in murdering entire small countries worth of llamas. Really the sort of thing I haven't played since Smash TV back when most people reading this review weren't even born or were busy filling diapers.I have no doubt this would be amazing couch co-op for we're-idiot-college-roommates, but for god's sake I got this on Steam and it'd be really swell if I could give the creators more of my paycheck and tax return money by shilling out gift copies for friends who will never play this with me anyway if it had online multiplayer. Just saying.TL;DR - I didn't mean to go past 2 hours of played time so I could refund it but here we are.. It's not bad. A fun little Rogue-Lite top-down shooter. Gameplay is serviceable. The cutscene at the start is absolute cringe, but I think that's the point. My problem is that in a world with so many amazing games at the sub 20 dollar price point offering fantastic replay value (Slay the Spire and Dungreed come to mind) it's hard to say that I would recommend this game. There are just a lot of better games to spend 13-20 bucks on. That's less a knock on these devs and their product and more a statement of how great current indie games have been. Additionally, that's coming from someone who used to think Indie devs were eroding the expected quality of products. Btw, Steam, Give us a judge based on your own taste in games button. I like Rogue-Like's but am meh on top-down-shooters. If you're super into top-down shooters this might be your jam.. Even in casual I struggled to progress through the game. And I recently beat Nioh and Dark Souls 3 and.... you blow up llamas with random weapons and they bite metal pieces and your mech blows up, its fun and funny. you guys srsly need to work on your weapon types and the core shooter flow. there is no gameplay around regening your HP and so far the weapon types are quite dull. the flow of the game just gets a bit obstructed by the fact that the only way to regen energy is to kill and there is no way to regen hp (at the start atleast).also your default controls are not so comfortable (I didnt use dash at all since it is on middle mouse button - how do you expect me to fire from both weapons and press the 2nd mouse button?) Yeah - i could change my weapon controls - but having bad default weapon controls is not a great idea.also you should work on your aiming controls - you have a limited distance you can draw your cursor and that fells really off and so far the default mouse sensitivity feels RLY uncomfortable, add that to the fact that the camera rolls around like mad (yeah it looks funky at start, but later starts to get annoying)the llama theme and the pun density setting rly made my day. at first it was cringy af, but after 10 minutes i got hooked.visuals are nice. not the problem spot of the game.if you want any detailed tips on twin-stick top-down game design you can pm me. i happened to work on a twin stick shooter myself atm and could share some insight.. There are llamas and you can murder them. It's a great game if you wanna sit down for 10 minutes and just forget the world. Theres no deep storyline to keep track of, no complicated controls to memorize etc. Just sit down, blow up some llamas and have some fun. My partner and I enjoyed the snot out of this last night.A few recommendations though:Its very hard and there is no way to regain health once you lost it. Maybe make a few different difficulty modes?When you drop a gun and pick up a new one, theres no way to switch back to the old gun. I often pick up a new gun (which I hate) and then I completely lost the old gun. Overall I definitely recommend this game!
